I want you to wrap up warm for this weekend’s coffee share. This week, I am inviting you to join Bill and me at a drone show. Public art can take many forms but this must be one of the more unusual entries.
A group of us went to watch the classic Christmas eve story, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens interpreted by drones. The 45 minute show took place at the unique stadium, Gloucestershire County Cricket ground in Bishopston, north Bristol. In England cricket is only played in the summer so the ground is sometimes used for other events in the winter. The Christmas Carol is a touring show by Celestial Productions which uses very advanced technology to program the drones to avoid collisions. On their website they say that they hope drone shows will provide a quieter alternative to firework displays. Personally I think there is a place for both.
The small lightweight drones have LED lights which change colour to create the pictures. I was suprised how well they were able to tell the story of Ebenezer Scrooge and the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. The story was read by Matt Lucas who was the ideal narrator.
The drones brought the characters like the miser Scrooge and Bob Cratchett’s son, Tiny Tim to life.
The drones were also able to form typical Christmas pictures. I found that it was quite difficult to capture some of the images as they moved quickly.
We were very lucky to have good weather as drones can’t fly when it is very wet or windy.

It is amazing what we are capable of producing nowadays. I’ve seen some pretty cool drone shows. Still not sure how I feel about some drone “jobs”, but for the most part they can show some pretty neat things.

Christmas lights are so wonderful. We have a festival of lights where you can drive through a series of beautiful light displays, or you can bundle up and take a horse-drawn wagon ride to see them. Christmas lights are one of my favourite parts of the holiday season.
It gets dark here very early so I love light shows. Yours sounds fun.
